On May 11, 2025, the city of Chiclayo, Peru, witnessed a historic event as over 10,000 faithful gathered in front of the Basilica and Cathedral of Santa María to celebrate the election of Pope Leo XIV.
The newly elected pontiff, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Martínez, holds dual citizenship in the United States and Peru. He previously served as the bishop of Chiclayo for more than eight years.
The evening Mass was led by Bishop Edinson Farfán, along with many local priests. A stage and altar were set up in the cathedral plaza, decorated with vibrant music performances and large banners, creating a joyful and festive atmosphere.
Bishop Farfán expressed deep gratitude and joy, emphasizing the close relationship between Pope Leo XIV and the local community. He stated, "We are filled with great happiness, as Pope Leo XIV is not only a former bishop of our diocese but also a beloved member of our community."
This celebration served as a reflection of the strong bond between Pope Leo XIV and the people of Chiclayo, highlighting the city's pride in his elevation to the papacy.
